Scalar was established in 2019 as a direct response to the growing need for sustainable finance for innovative clean energy projects. The team has more than 10 years of experience advising, investing, modeling, and structuring project finance transactions in clean energy and infrastructure projects with nearly $400 Million in cumulative project costs in the last 12 months.

Scalar seeks to participate in addressing Africa’s US$3 trillion NDC Climate and SDG investment Gap by mobilizing private capital using the DFIs, Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs) climate alignment and Private Capital Mobilization (PCM) to establish the $100 Million Africa Decarbonization project that will be invested in decarbonization infrastructure. As much investments as possible will focus on SMEs and support first-time women and indigenous developers. Scalar’s involvement in South Africa Real Estate Corporation’s (REIT) renewable energy projects in their commercial and industrial portfolio, led to the creation of the Scalar Africa Decarbonization project to invest in clean energy and energy efficiency projects across sub-Saharan Africa. These projects seek to address the funding challenges of indigenous-owned project developers and independent power producers operating in the clean energy sector.

The fund also focuses on work in SMEs and underserved communities when possible. Scalar exists to unlock institutional funding to support the emergence of first-tier, indigenous, and women developers and power producers (IPPs). The fund encourages the financial sector to participate in decarbonization strategies. We recognize the emergence of specialist fund management capabilities in the clean energy sector and will fill this space.

Renewable energy and energy efficiency projects, underpinned by strong community development license obligations, address Scalar’s social impact mandate. Scalar provides a comprehensive investment solution by augmenting our renewable energy assets with additional decarbonization infrastructure assets that meet the direct needs of SMEs, whilst positively contributing to the fund’s yield, impact, and return profile. As an Indigenous-owned firm, we believe that our operating context compels us to integrate socio-economic development considerations to ensure the sustainability of our investments. The impact is integral to our DNA.
